DENVER, CO – COLOR and Cobalt, alongside Democratic lawmakers and reproductive health advocates, applaud the forthcoming introduction of a new legislative package aimed at strengthening and protecting abortion access in Colorado. The proposed legislation includes measures to ensure access to abortion and miscarriage care in emergency rooms is available when necessary to protect a patient’s health, as well as provide enhanced protections under Colorado’s shield law. This comprehensive package reaffirms Colorado’s commitment to protecting reproductive rights and ensuring that everyone can access the care they need, regardless of their circumstances.
“Colorado has led the way in protecting reproductive rights, but we know that ongoing attacks on abortion access demand continued action,” said Senator Lisa Cutter and Senator Faith Winter, sponsors of the shield law legislation. “This bill strengthens legal protections for patients and providers, ensuring that no one in our state faces legal threats or intimidation for accessing or offering essential reproductive health care. We are committed to ensuring Colorado remains a safe place for those seeking and providing care, and we will not back down in the fight to defend these fundamental rights.”
“As we face growing threats to reproductive rights at the federal level, it is critical that we take action to ensure patients in Colorado receive the emergency care they need, regardless of shifting federal policies. This bill provides clarity and protection for both patients and providers, preventing harmful changes at the national level from interfering with essential, life-saving medical care in our state,” said Senator Julie Gonzales and Senator Mike Weissman, sponsors of the emergency care protections bill.
“Last November, Colorado voters made it clear that protecting abortion rights is a priority by enshrining them in our state constitution,” said Karen Middleton, President of Cobalt Advocates. “This legislative package is an important step in ensuring that abortion care remains accessible and protected. We look forward to working with the General Assembly to implement the will of the voters and ensure access to reproductive health care across the state.”
“In Colorado, we have worked hard to protect our freedoms from government interference and unnecessary criminalization,” said Dusti Gurule, President & CEO of the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR). “The threats to our rights are more significant than ever, and we’ve already seen efforts at the national level to roll back the progress we’ve made. But we must remain vigilant. We must continue pushing forward to ensure justice and protect our communities.”
